My name is Joanne Palermo. My daughter, Gia and I own It Takes a Village Baby Consultants. We are a hands-on baby consulting firm that specializes in newborn care, parent coaching, and sleep training. In a nutshell, our philosophy is to support new and expectant families in making the choices that are right for their families. We don’t just want to be another source doling out advice to parents. Instead, we want to empower families to be confident, trust their instincts, and be active participants in the care and development of their child.
Let me tell you a little about myself, and how I started this amazing journey helping parents. I am an early intervention developmental specialist who has been working for over 30 years with children and their families. In this work, I noticed that we create a “village” of people that includes nurses, teachers, therapists, nutritionists, etc. for children with special needs and their families. As a result, these families tend to get a lot of guidance and emotional support from those that surround them. I started to think about families that do not have children with special needs, but still need a “village” to help with the many challenges of parenthood.
With my background in development and my daughter’s background in the medical field (Gia is a NICU nurse), we thought that we could create this support for all families. We have also added several other specialists in “Our Village” that help provide this support.
What we have seen over the past three years has been amazing. We’ve noticed a natural flow that our services provide for families. First, new or expectant parents usually call us for our Newborn Care Package. With this package, we not only go through bathing, diapering, feeding, development, and sleep; we also provide the family with a safe place to ask any questions they may have. By gaining their trust, we hope to help them gain the confidence they need for when their little one is born.
Shortly after, these parents call us for Sleep Consulting. I am a Certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant for children up to age 5. I work with parents to find a sleep solution that works best for their parenting philosophy and their child’s temperament. After the initial consultation, we come up with an action plan that can be implemented immediately. For up to two weeks, I am in contact with the families to get feedback and make the necessary adjustments.
Finally, when their little one hits those “amazing” toddler years, the parents call us for Parent Coaching. My experience with children with special needs has given me a unique insight into behavior in all children. Parenting toddlers is much different than parenting preschoolers or elementary children. We use a positive parenting approach and, together with the family, we come up with practical strategies that are easy to execute and that work within the family’s routines and parenting philosophy.
We are excited about joining the Philadelphia Maternity Network! The network is founded on the same principles that we believe in. We are all trying to create a “village” to support and empower families.
